There’s no doubt you’ve seen the U.S. Ski Team tearing down the slopes in their skin-tight, futuristic Spyder ski suits. Lindsey Vonn in her signature white GS racing suit, and Julia Mancuso donning her stars and stripes-inspired design as they secure podium after podium during the Audi FIS World Cup. Over the past thirty years, the USSA and Spyder Active Sports, Inc. have enjoyed one of the most envied partnerships in professional sports. There are few occasions where two entities come together in such a perfect melding of raw talent and technical know-how. For country and glory, USSA athletes brave the toughest courses around the world, tackling terrain and hitting speeds most skiers can only dream of. As they travel to mountains around the world, there is no reprieve from their international peers. These young men and women are pitted against some of the most fearsome competitors known to any sporting discipline — but the U.S. Team has an edge thanks to the support of gear technicians like the ones behind Spyder.
“Spyder is vital for the U.S. Ski Team as both a strong marketing and athletic partner,” said USSA Chief Marketing Officer Mike Jaquet. “Spyder’s innovation in racing suit technology helps our athletes go fast and its ability to translate that into a marketing message is a big help for both of our brands.”
This past season the entire U.S. Ski Team did exceptional! U.S. athletes kicked ass and took names, smashing records and looking good doing it. The USSA recognizes that they couldn’t have done it alone, and in honor of Spyder’s role as a premier supporter of the U.S. Alpine Ski Team they were presented with the 2012 Innovative Licensing Award at the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Partner Summit held recently in beautiful Park City, Utah. This is the second time the company has earned with this award, the first being in 2010.
Spyder is one of the most iconic brands in snow sports, and held in high regard by both skiers and snowboarders around the world. This is for good reason. Not only does the company continue to innovate the sport with their unique product designs, but the present themselves and their culture through brilliant marketing programs like the Spyder Antidote. The company wowed spectators at World Cup events in Beaver Creek and Aspen with their epic Spyder Land Yacht. This mobile command center provided the very necessary accommodations for our hard-working athletes to rest and recharge during the events.
In other automotive inspired collaborations, Spyder worked with Audi to develop a number of high performance vehicles infused with the same technology and materials built into the company’s latest product lines. We caught up with Spyder earlier this year at the SIA Snow Show held in Denver, Colorado to witness the unveiling of the Spyder Audi GS — it was glorious!
“Spyder’s illustrious, time-tested partnership with the U.S. Ski Team has spanned over three decades and has progressively deepened throughout that time,” noted Russ Rowan, Spyder’s VP of Sales and Global Marketing. “Having the USSA as a partner – and the culture that comes along with it – enables us to push the envelope of innovation with both our product development initiatives and our marketing outreach efforts. This award is a testament to the fact that the USSA feels as strongly about the partnership as we do, and we look forward to continuing to grow and deepen it moving forward to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and beyond,” continued Rowan.
