Romney’s Running Mate was almost a Pro Skier

Paul Ryan, the Republican Congressman from Wisconsin, could potentially be America’s next Vice President, and perhaps the fittest politician we have seen in a while. Both Obama and Romney are devoted to physical fitness and health, but Ryan has raised the bar.

Ryan grew up skiing in Wisconsin, and at one point in his life had to choose between a life as a politician and the life of a professional skier. He chose a career in government, and left the ski dreams behind him. That did not, however, diminish his tenacity for keeping a fit body.

The death of his father may have been the driving force of Ryan’s devotion to exercise. When he was only 16, he found his 55 year old father in bed after a heart attack. Ryan has mentioned that his grandfather and great grandfather also died of heart attacks in their 50′s.

At age 42, Ryan has maintained a healthy physique of 163 lbs and about 7% body fat on his 6’2″ frame. Doing cross fit training may be the politician’s secret, as he has attributed his being fit to the well known P90X workout, which enforces muscle confusion.

Could having an athletic Vice President give America a boost in the already climbing race to fit and healthy? And could this be a positive for the ski industry as well? We’ll have to wait and see.
