The latest episode of Salomon Freeski TV takes us to a very remote river valley in the heart of Russia with professional freeskiers Kaj Zackrisson, Mark Abma, and Mike Douglas. Tucked away on the north side of the Caucasus Mountains is the Arkhyz Gosdacha, a fortified mountain retreat that once played a pivotal role in the Cold War. Once it served as a meeting place for the highest ranking members of the Soviet Union, today it hosts the upper echelon of freeskiing royalty.
Word has gotten out that the Arkhyz Gosdacha is a fantastic jump point for accessing some of the world’s top heliskiing. It didn’t take much convincing for the Salomon crew to hop a flight out to the motherland, to sample the goods.
This video is a testament to the progress humanity has made in the past three decades. A location that was once used to discuss wartime strategy, is now filled with laughter and talk of exploration! As we approach the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, it’s amazing to reflect on the progression we have achieved in both sport and in culture.
