December 8th, 2012 is going to be an awesome day for snowboard fans in the Far East. Shaun White and Oakley have partnered once again to bring the Air and Style Big Air snowboarding event in Beijing, China! Going into its third year, the 2012 Shaun White and Oakley Air and Style Beijing promises to bring out some of the biggest names in snowboarding including the likes of Sebastian Toutant, Mark McMorris and Stale Sandbech.
The event takes place in the famous Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium, and is the only 6 star World Snowboard Tour event in Asia. Twenty-four of the world’s top professional snowboarders will be in attendance, and while they are among action sports most elite athletes, they’ll need to exhibit their most solid resolve when dropping in from the pucker-inducing 50 meter high start gate on the top of an absolutely massive super ramp.
Patrick McIlvain, Oakley Vice president Global Sports Marketing explained his motive for choosing Asia as the contest’s destination, saying, “China is continually showing its strength as a global sports leader and the action sports arena is no exception. Now in its third year, Air & Style Beijing is building momentum behind the sport of snowboarding in one of the most important emerging markets in the world. Oakley is proud to partner with Shaun White in bringing one of the best snowboard events of the year to the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium.”
The competition has undergone a few significant format changes for 2012, and for the first time, all 24 riders will start in a head-to-head battle from round 1 until the final. After the first wave, 12 winners and four of the defeated riders will advance to the second round. Once the field has been whittled down to four remaining riders, they’ll enter into the Super Final — and that’s when things get saucy! With 1,000 World Snowboard Tour points and a 75,000 Euro prize purse on the line, you can count on everyone to pull out all the stops.
The action packed event will be complimented by the always epic musical styling of Sun Nan and Band, who in old Air and Style tradition will perform live on stage for the crowd of Chinese action sports enthusiasts and the invited snowboard elite.
