The past weekend saw a series of storms move throughout areas along the west coast. While these weather patterns meant rain for lower regions, precipitation in higher altitude areas like the Eastern Sierra resulted in heaps of fresh powder. As of Monday Mammoth Mountain is reporting 4-6 feet of new snowfall across the resort.
Skiers and snowboarders visiting the resort can expect a base depth of 50-70 inches. With all the new coverage, Mammoth officials have announced that they will be opening the lifts at Canyon and Eagle Lodges on Friday, along with all resort terrain.
If you’re a MVP season pass holder you’ll be able to attend “MVP Early Ups!” on Saturday, December 8th. The lifts start spinning at 7:30am with RSVP. Those that need to buy a day pass can expect it to run them $82 with a My Mammoth Card advance purchase.
Either way, the conditions are irresistible – so gear up!
While you’re there, you might run into some of the members from the U.S. Freeskiing Team. In preparation for the 2013 competition season, some of the team’s top slopestyle skiers are hitting Mammoth Mountain’s Unbound Terrain Park. Athletes like X Games gold medalist Tom Wallisch and AFP overall World Champion Gus Kenworthy have been lapping the park, perfecting their runs for the season. The first AFP platinum level event of the season will be the Dew Tour. It all goes down in Breckenridge, Colorado on December 12th.
Newly back on skis from an injury last January, five-time X Games medalist Sammy Carlson and teammates have been utilizing Mammoth Mountain’s 55-foot tabletop jumps and rails to practice for the upcoming season.
When asked about how it feels to be back on the mountain and competing, Sammy Carlson had this to say: “It feels so good to be on snow and getting my tricks back on point. The weather at Mammoth has been awesome and I am stoked on being here; they always kill it with their terrain park. I’m really working on my run for Dew Tour, Grand Prix and X Games. It’s cool having Tom and my other teammates here to push me. I’m for sure having a fun time.”
