You like snow? Think Japan!

Welcome to this new column that will be bringing you news about the snow in Japan.

My names's David.  Hi.

Before I came to Japan, I had not even really considered skiing or snowboarding here. It just didn't fit into the image I had of Japan, and there was little to no information out there in English that let me know about the amazing snowsports on offer here.  Luckily I came across a small website that was providing some information, and now 10 years later I am involved in the day to day running of that website.  It's called SnowJapan (www.snowjapan.com).  SnowJapan has certainly changed a lot in the 12 years since it first launched, but the independent status and concept remains the same.   The idea is to introduce Japan winter sports to the world in a clear and unbias way. We have an active and friendly Forums as well where people both living in Japan and overseas exchange info and ideas.  You can find those at www.snowjapanforums.com - hope to see you there!

In recent years, skiing in Japan has become more popular with increasing numbers of 'foreigners' finding out this now-not-so

-secret (partly our fault!) and visiting Japan to ski and snowboard.

There's over 500 ski hills in Japan.  Many of those are tiny local places, but there's a considerable number of large scale ski resorts as well.  And they're dotted around most of the country, meaning that from most places in Japan you are never that far away from a ski lift.  In recent years, resorts in Hokkaido and Nagano in particular have got an increasing amount of attention from overseas and that's only going to accelerate.  The main reason for that is the both the quality and quantity of snow that falls in Japan.  Truly some of the best and most in the world.   I'll go into that more another time.

Japan is also a wonderful place.

Anyway, here on The Ski Channel we plan to post weekly (or so) updates with news on how the snow is falling in Japan, along with a weekly bit of hopefully interersting information for those of you not familiar with Japan winter sports.

We're actually a few weeks away from launching a completely new version of SnowJapan, so keep your eyes out for that.

Hope you enjoy it.
