After four days of rabid anticipation, the 2013 Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face is finally upon us! The global competition is set to begin Friday, January 11, 2013 at 9am (PST), on the slopes of Revelstoke, British Columbia. A collection of elite skiers and snowboarders hailing from around the world are poised to make their first descents down Mackenzie Peak’s on the “Mac Daddy” face. The course boasts an absolutely absurd vertical, and some extremely technical terrain. It's a venue with all the makings for an epic competition!

Revelstoke Mountain Resort has a solid reputation for receiving heavy snowfall throughout the season. With more than three feet of new snow this week, leading to the opening day of January 7th being pushed back, the mountain has more-than confirmed its notoriety.

Mac Daddy - Revelstoke

“We anticipated Revelstoke would likely provide snowy weather and prepared ourselves for the storms and challenges they bring to the competition. After recent heavy snowfall, this year in particular is setting up to be some of the best conditions we have ever experienced on the FWT,” stated FWT Americas Competition Director Bryan Barlow. “Going to the end of our weather window is not a surprise, but is going to be well worth the wait for this first competition of the 2013 Freeride World Tour.”

Weather forecasters have identified a cold, dry, high-pressure system rolling through the region, which will provide optimal safe snow conditions and ideal visibility for the day of competition.

Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, the FWT experience is available to anyone with an Internet connection. Action sports fans can tune in via the live webcast.

First up at 9am will be the men's snowboarding discipline, followed by the men's freeskiing. Once the men have tested the waters, it will be time for the women's snowboarding group and women's freeskiing, respectively.

One thing is for certain, after waiting in the wings for the past four days, the FWT athletes are going to be charged up during Friday's competition.

Defending Men’s Freeskiing Champion, Reine Barkered of Sweden remarked, “The kick-off in Revelstoke is going to be great. A mountain like that is the perfect place for a freeride competition. I’m just glad to be a part of it and no matter what, I’m going to enjoy the show.”

The competition format will see FWT athletes taking their runs one at a time, each beginning at the summit starting gate. A panel of judges will rate each run based on categories such as difficulty, control, fluidity, technique and style – with the resulting scores deciding whether the athlete advances.
