Red Bull Switchboard went off like a firecracker this past weekend, attracting a collection of SoCal’s most ambitious action sports enthusiasts. Switchboard is of course, the energy drink company’s annual event, which organizes a day of surf and snow.
There are few places on the planet where it is feasible for one to surf and shred all in the same day. With the close proximity of mountains and coastal areas, Southern California serves as a prime location to pursue such an epic feat. Over 600 college students were in attendance, hailing from over 25 different colleges around San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles. The adventure began with a surf session at Huntington Beach and La Jolla Shores. Professional surfer Jamie Sterling was out in the water, catching some big waves with all the attendees.
“It was an awesome day doing two of my favorite sports,” Sterling said. “It’s a unique thing to be able to do two board sports in one day and hanging out with all the college kids was a blast. Being able to participate in surf and snow in the same day was a first for me and a really great experience.”
Once everyone had their fill of waves and complimentary breakfast burritos, a caravan of charter busses arrived to chauffeur attendees up to Big Bear Lakes for some epic shredding on the slopes of Bear Mountain with professional snowboarders John Jackson and Brock Crouch.
Upon arrival, the students were greeted by phenomenal snow and absurdly gorgeous weather. Several “switchboarders” even opted to remain in their bikinis and board shorts, taking full advantage of the perfect spring conditions across Bear Mountain.
Thanks to Red Bull, 600 action sports enthusiasts have now experienced surf and snow in the same day. Switchboarders finished out the day with one less item on their bucket list, impressive bragging rights and most importantly — memories of good times with good friends!
