On Saturday April 20th, 2013, Squaw Valley Village will be ready to embrace the annual Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival from 11 in the morning until 5 in the evening. This volunteer-run, non-profit event was created to recognize the unique beauty of the area and has become the largest event of its kind in the area. With free admission to anyone, free transportation being provided to and from North Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and Incline Village, and a host of entertainment and educational resources for adults and children alike, the day always proves to be a great experience.
To help raise awareness for the environment, the theme for this year’s event is “Do Another Thing.” There will be no shortage of fun activities to teach guests about recycling and composting strategies, alternative energy, sustainability, watershed and forest health, and reducing ecological footprints. In an attempt to reach the goal of a zero waste, carbon neutral event, trash receptacles will not be provided and booths will be urged to minimize handouts and all forms of waste possible.
Just in case the educational activities weren’t enough to keep you occupied, there will be no shortage of live music and entertainment through out the day.
The child’s zone will include a composting zone that will allow children to run around and play in the dirt, a station for them to get their faces painted, and activities to teach them about interesting environmental strategies such as solar panels. There will also be an appearance from the Science Wizard, a professional children’s comedian and entertainer.
The live music acts will include Sneaky Creatures, an up and coming jazz/alternative country local group who have been gathering buzz in the area with their unique sound, the Sierra Drifters, and guitarist JJ von Briesen.
Back by popular demand will be the “Environlution Trashion” performance. The Truckee High School Environlution Club, “Trashion,” will be hosting a recycling fashion show featuring clothes made out of non-biodegradable materials accompanied by their educational and witty explanations written by the students who created them.
A free community-recycling event will be held in the village parking lot between 10AM and 2PM where event goers can drop off old electronic products or shred paper. A complete list of acceptable items can be found here.
