All eyes will be on Japan next week, as the 2009 FIS Freestyle World Championships begin on Monday, March 2. About 520 athletes and coaches from 33 nations will rock and rocket at venues in Inawashiro and Bandai, in the Fukushima mountains.

The American athletes are already training at their respective competition sites, and are excited to be in Japan. According to U.S. Freestyle Ski Team aerial star, Emily Cook, their hotel is equipped with at least a dozen Japanese baths of all temperatures, which makes the après ski pretty comfortable.

The nature-minded aspect of these World Champs’ doesn’t stop there. In an unprecedented effort, the event organizers catered to the environment, and prepared the competition sites with the aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Now it’s up to the athletes to deliver the smokeshow.
