It’s opening weekend of the the Xterra World Tour.  The tour, as well as the broader sport of off-road triathalon races, is quite literally exploading in interest and participation.  This year, the Xterra World Tour opens up on three different continents.  Saipan, the tiny pacific island, will see a stacked field, including Great Britain World Champion Julie Dibens looking to avenge her only losses against 4-time Saipan champion Renata Bucher.  On the men’s side, 2002 Saipan champ Mike Vine will be competing against notable triathalon studs Andrew Noble of Australia and England’s Sam Gardner.

In South Africa, the German duo of Felix Schumann and Nico Pfitzenmaier will attempt to be the first non-South Africans to win in Grabouw.  Dan Hugo, Lieuwe Boonstra, and Kent Horner all are primed to defend their home turf.

And finally, in New Zealand this weekend, ’08 champ Terenzo Bozzone will receive a serious challenge from ’07 champ Tim Widing.

Three continents, three races, with invites to Maui hanging in the balance at the Xterra World Tour opening weekend.
