Winter Games New Zealand Added as Qualifier for Winter X Games

The next Winter X Games just might have a few more Kiwis competing in Aspen.  With an abbreviation that sounds like a radio station, WGNZ (Winter Games New Zealand) has been added as a qualifier for ESPN's Winter X Games.

Josh Loubek, the freeski head judge and all-around Jedi Master of the Winter X Games, commented "“New Zealand athletes have really made a big impact on the world of skiing, such as the Wells brothers,” Loubek said. “Winter Games NZ will provide a perfect venue for them to compete. This, along with other big name athletes from around the world, will create a huge event certain to capture a receptive audience. I look forward to a high level competition as we lead into the Winter Olympics in Whistler the following season. "Additionally, New Zealand is absolutely one of my favorite places in the world," Loubek continued, "so I’m also excited to visit and enjoy the friendly people and beautiful scenery.”

A complete list of competitors will be released nearer the event date.  The 10-day shindig starts August 21st and features alpine skiing (Super G, GS, SL), cross country skiing, curling (woohoo!), figure skating, ice hockey, snowboarding, and freestyle skiing.
