This weekend Oct. 9-12 marks the annual Whistler tradition of the Turkey Sale. The Turkey Sale, commencing each year during Canadien Thanksgiving, features ski and snowboard equipment at great deals. Of particular value are the deals on last season’s equipment that can run as high as 70 percent off.

The main event will be hosted in the Blackcomb day lodge, where Whistler Blackcomb will feature their stock of inventory. The event runs Friday, Oct. 9 from noon to 9 p.m., then from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Monday’s sale runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Besides Whistler Blackcomb, the Whistler Mountain Ski Club will also be hosting their Ski SWAP (Sale With Awesome Prices) in an effort to raise money to subsidize the costs of racing. At the Ski SWAP individuals can buy and sell used skis, boards, and gear.

To sell equipment at the Ski SWAP individuals can purchase tags for $3 an item, and then are charged a 20% commission on completed sales. Equipment drop-off starts at 3 p.m. on Friday and lasts until 1 p.m. on Saturday. Unsold items can be claimed after 1 p.m. on Saturday, before 3 p.m. Sunday. All unsold items will be considered donations to the Whistler Mountain Ski Club.

The Ski SWAP typically raises nearly $50,000 for the WMSC, and hopes to raise even more this year. Due to budget cuts, WMSC only received 20% of their normal funds. A strong SWAP could go a long way towards securing a healthy financial situation.

“We don’t want anybody not to ski race because they don’t have the money. It’s a wonderful sport,” said event organized Dennis Perry.
