The upcoming ski and snowboard season is quickly approaching, but this weekend, Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry, Maine was hosting an event that did not take place on the slopes.  The North American Wife Carrying Championship took place at the resort, and if you’ve never heard of this event, here’s how it goes down.  A man has to carry a woman, or vice versa, over an obstacle course that features a muddy water hole and two log obstacles.  The course is 278 yards, and the couple that covers it in the fastest time, wins.

This year’s winners are Dave and Lacey Castro of Lewiston, Maine.  They competed against 40 other teams, and finished the course in 54.45 seconds.  Their prizes included Lacey Castro’s weight in beer, 97 pounds, and five times her weight in cash, $485.  Since they won the North American event, they are eligible to compete in the world championships next July in Finland.
