For the first time in five years, the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay is on!  The contest has taken place only seven times prior, as there is a minimum wave height of 20 feet.  Thanks to El Nino, wave heights are in the 25-30 foot range.

Eddie Aikau was a famous lifeguard and surfer on the North Shore.  A revered big wave surfer, the Eddie attracts all the greats of big wave surfing, including Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Peter Mel, Flea, and Sunny Garcia.  Invite only, these athletes put their lives on the line, ala those on the Freeride World Tour who tackle Verbier’s Bec des Rosses, and World Cup downhillers on the Hahnenkamm.

Live streaming footage of the contest can be viewed here.
