New this season, Sunday River adds to its calendar of signature events a weekend dedicated to the best winter has to offer, rightfully named Winterfest Weekend, taking place December 17-19, 2010.
Friday, December 17
For guests arriving to the resort late Friday night, Sunday River celebrates the start of a weekend-long celebration with a Chondola ride to the Peak Lodge for the first Dining at The Peak experience of the season. Specially prepared for this winter celebration, Friday’s menu includes a mix of local and seasonal ingredients designed to delight. Cost is $59 per person; reservations are required: (207) 824-3500.
Saturday, December 18
During the day, skiers and snowboarders can take advantage of the most dependable snow in New England, not to mention off-snow and off-of-the-ground fun with Zipline Tours. Tours run approximately two hours and take place in a wooded area near South Ridge. Cost is $59 per person with the purchase of a lift ticket or season pass. SundayRiver will also welcome holiday favorites, Santa and Sunday River’s very own Eddy the Yeti, at the Santa Wish Party for Kids in the Sunday River Discovery Center from 3-5 p.m.
Of course the fun doesn’t stop just because the sun sets thanks to the official start to Sunday River’s 12-Hour Skiing and Riding with free skiing from 4-8 p.m. and the South Ridge Fire Party with Sunshine Fire Entertainment from 7:45-8:15 p.m.
Guests who work up a thirst for more fun should make their way to the Winterfest Tailgate Party from 7-9 p.m. in the Welcome Center of the South Ridge Base Lodge to savor creative libations from Maine’s own “ground to glass” small batch distillery and award-winning Cold River who will be there serving customized vodka, blueberry vodka, and gin cocktails out of the trunk of Sunday River’s ’59 Thunderbird.
Save room to sample signature dishes from area restaurants at the second annual Many Flavors of Sunday River culinary tour also taking place in the South Ridge Base Lodge from 7-9 p.m. Tickets are $15 or $10 with the donation of a winter coat to benefit WCSH TV’s annual Coats for Kids drive going on all weekend in the Welcome Center in the South Ridge Base Lodge. Finally, that night, adults can go back in time and celebrate child-like behaviors as Motor Booty Affair and Time Pilots take to the stage at the Foggy Goggle for the resort’s first-ever Back In Time Party from 3 p.m. till the bar closes. Guests who come dressed to impress in their best ’70s and ’80s attire get a gift from the Foggy Goggle and can enter to win a $50 gift certificate to use in the restaurant and bar any time this season.
The perfect finale to any celebration? A fireworks display at 8:30 p.m. best viewed from the social hub of Winterfest Weekend-the South Ridge Base Lodge.
