Moonlight Basin announces changes to headwaters spring runoff event

Moonlight Basin Resort’s 6th Annual Headwaters Spring Runoff event, occurring April 1 and 2, 2011, will feature a different format than in years past. The hiking portion of the event has been eliminated, new combined competitive categories have been established and a cash purse of $1,000 has been announced for this year’s event. Also up for grabs are additional non-cash prizes from Rossignol, Union Realm, Lone Mountain Sports and a cat skiing trip from Great Northern Powder Guides. Registration is open and Moonlight invites every skier & boarder looking for a challenge to come out and participate.

Following the expressed wishes of past participants, the hiking portion of the event has been eliminated to cater to a more focused group of big mountain freeride competitors.  In 2011, the competitive categories will include a combined men’s alpine and telemark category, men’s snowboard, and a single, winner take-all women’s division. The $1,000 cash purse will be divided equally among the adult categories, with first place winners taking home $300. A “Sickbyrd” category also exists for the most outstanding line or air of the weekend, and will be awarded $100.

Pre-registration is required for the event. Click here to download a registration packet, or registration forms are also available at the administration and ski patrol headquarters. The event is capped at 80 competitors, so pre-registration is required to guarantee a spot in this year’s event.

The 6th Annual Headwaters Spring Runoff takes place within Stillwater Bowl where Moonlight Basin’s famed Headwaters area is located. Situated on the flank of 11,166 foot Lone Mountain, the area is known for its extreme, boundless terrain and features countless cliff bands and chutes.  An excellent ski season has deposited a nearly unprecedented bounty of snow for competitors and spectators alike.

Moonlight Basin is excited to celebrate the event with a KICKOFF PARTY on Friday, April 1st. Competitors are encouraged to preview the terrain, and in the evening they are invited to join Moonlight Basin for an evening of festivities and food.
