Kirkwood Mountain Resort is set to host the first of four stops through Lake Tahoe, CA on the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour this year as participants compete for cash prizes and the ultimate title of “Banzai Master.” Each race features four athletes at a time in a wide-open top to bottom terrain. The Rahlves’ Banzai Tour is the extreme challenge of ski and riding skills as the entire course is all-natural with not even an ounce of man-made snow.
What makes the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour so unique is that there is no ski or riding style that works best, so there are athletes, men and women, of all different backgrounds and even recreational skiers and riders (above the age of 18) that can participate in the competition. Since the course is all-natural, there is no advantage that can sometimes come from man-made snow as well.
Casey Blann, Kirkwood’s general manager, commented, “It’s not an easy race or one for the faint of heart. Watching these talented, daring skiers and snowboarders compete is going to be a thrill.”
Kirkwood is famous for massive amounts of powder and extreme terrain, which the tour definitely utilizes with the Wall Banzai. The Wall’s open top section winds down to meet the CEP compression, which moves into the cat road where athletes plunge into Snow Snake Gully. Then, athletes ride the gully on the banks all the way to the line.
The World Champion skier and creator of the event, Daron Rahlves, will be on-site throughout the entire competition and featured at the welcome parties signing autographs and conducting interviews with the media. All tour participants, including athletes, sponsors, friends, family, media, race crew, and resort affiliates, are invited to enjoy the beginning of the tour at the Welcome Party on Feb. 1, 2013 at Red Cliffs Lodge from 5-7 pm where Rahlves will kick off the event with food, drinks, and music.
The Après Party will be held on Feb. 2, 2013 at Red Cliffs from 3-6pm hosted by High Fives Foundation where Rahlves will honor the Bank of the West “fastest qualifier” and fastest times from every division. There will also be High Fives raffle winners announced with sponsor prizes, including two Kirkwood lift tickets.
The solo qualifying timed runs will take place on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 from 9am-3pm, which will determine the athletes that move on to Sunday’s final heats taking place from 9am-3pm.
