Protect Our Winters Releases Coal Export Documentary: Momenta

After almost of year of production, Protect Our Winters has launched their new documentary, Momenta. This short film tells the story of a Pacific Northwest coal project that is threatening the global environment on a scale greater than the Keystone Pipeline.

With American demand for coal in decline, the coal industry has turned its attention to new Asian markets, extracting over 140 million pounds of coal per year from the Powder River Basin to ship it overseas via deepwater ports in Washington and Oregon.

Momenta Film

Each day, over fifty mile-and-a-half-long trains, laden with Powder River Basin coal, will travel from Wyoming and Montana, thundering through hundreds of rural towns to ports in the Pacific Northwest. The near-constant stream of escaping coal dust imposes toxic environmental pollutants and a myriad of health risks on the communities through which the trains travel.  On a global scale, the amount of carbon emissions produced by burning Powder River Basin coal would result in cataclysmic and irreversible impacts on the global climate.

If we’re going to stabilize our climate, keeping Powder River Basin coal in the ground is critical, and it starts with keeping our Pacific Northwest ports closed to coal exports.

This film is presented by SNOCRU and narrated by mountaineer and author, Conrad Anker and features activist and author, Bill McKibben, pro snowboarder and Founder of Protect Our Winters Jeremy Jones, pro snowboarder Lucas Debari, and many others.
