41 years ago Billy Kidd and Larry Mahan invited ProRodeo stars to attend a day of skiing at Steamboat Resort. Little did Billy and Larry know their casual day of skiing would turn into one of the most anticipated events of the season. The Cowboy Downhill has over 100 of today’s top rodeo athletes competing in a different type of rodeo. These athletes bring their skills to the slopes, hoping to bring home not only a rodeo win, but a Cowboy Downhill win. To be able to compete in the event, Cowboys/Cowgirls must be registered as a competitor in the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo in Denver, be a member of the ProRodeo Cowboys Association or Professional Bull Riders, and wear chaps and a cowboy hats while competing, naturally. This hilarious event has become one of the highlights of the year for Steamboat Resort!

This year, Rodeo Coach Moore won his third Downhill Stampede title. Moore was not the only standout of the day; Steamboat also saw impressive runs from Marc Gill, Chad Braden, Boomer Reeves and Chanse Darling. Braden commented: “he watched the snowboard slopestyle event during the 2014 Winter Olympics and would much prefer sitting on a big saddle bronc any day rather than going off one of the big jumps like the Olympians tackle.” We aren’t so sure about that Braden, sitting on a big saddle bronc sounds pretty terrifying!

Thanks to Steamboat Resort and all the athletes who competed in the 41st Annual Bud Light Cowboy Downhill, we thoroughly enjoy this hilarious event!
