“Everyone joins ski patrol so they can ski more powder, but of course, we have to do some rescues along the way.”

Safety is not taken lightly as Solitude Mountain Resort. Their highly trained staff includes four avalanche dogs to help ensure no one is left behind in case of an emergency. Assistant Ski Patrol Manager, Keith Sternfels, has been working at Solitude Mountain for 26 years and he took the time to give us a behind-the-scenes look at what life is like patrolling the slopes.

The ski patrol at Solitude Mountain Resort works under Wasatch Backcountry Rescue, a non-profit organization under the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Department to find people lost due to avalanches.
