Fallen Star: Mountain Bike Racer Missy Giove Struck with Drug Charges

The 37-year-old Missy “the Missile” Giove once creamed the world’s competition in downhill mountain bike racing, notching World Championship and U.S. National titles. But now she’s facing a harrowing uphill battle.

Earlier this week Giove was arrested for possessing more than 200 pounds of marijuana. Authorities seized the drugs from the back of a truck she was driving in upstate NY. Giove is currently being held on $250,000 bail, and is joined in jail by her alleged partner in crime, Eric Canori. (All together police found nearly 400 pounds of pot in both Giove’s truck and Canori’s Saratoga Springs, NY home.)

Giove could face a $2 million fine and 40 years in prison if found guilty, but her fate is yet to be determined. On Thursday, public defender Tim Austin alleged the drugs were planted in Giove’s truck, possibly even by police.

Mountain bike fans and enthusiasts around the world are hoping for a brighter outcome.

I was reflecting on my mountain biking days a short while ago thinking about how despite my enthusiasm for the activity I could only name a few stars of the sport. I remembered John Tomac, Hans Rey, and Missy Giove. Missy Giove must have stuck in my memory partially because I associate her with Colorado (Carbondale?) where I have come to live happily and she stuck out as a free thinking, free spirited individual. My advice for Missy "the Missile" Giove is plead not guilty and read Hank Rearden’s speech to the court from Atlas Shrugged in your defense. The day has passed when twelve of your peers could be found who would be willing to lock you in a cage for decades because you had the courage to grow, trade, or consume the most useful plant on earth. Hand out Fully Informed Jury Association leaflets at the courthouse on the day of jury selection. Jury nullification is bound to play a central role in ending cannabis prohibition and who better than you to be the one who proves it! Free Marc Emery! Install Ron Paul! carbondale ??? what the heck is that ? you mean cannondale. see, the dope has screwed up your thinking. your logic is similary disaffected. Don't think a jury would pity her, or excuse her trading in pot. Look at the power of the drug overlords in mexico and elsewhere- what she did was help make them stronger. she traded with an organizatation that kidnaps and brutally tortures cops, judges, innocents and even slaughters children. you may feel all warm and fuzzy about that, but the reality is pretty evil.
