The area just west of Salt Lake City is currently being invaded by grasshoppers. The proportions are mythic: Think 2000 insects per square foot. Utah is becoming serious Hitchcock territory.

Grasshoppers arrive in seven to ten-year cycles, and agricultural experts posit that the several years of dryness followed by the incredibly late and wet winter storms have created the perfect environment for the insects to thrive. (It's also been a wet spring for the area.) There’s so much more vegetation for the grasshoppers to eat.

"I think you could say it's the worst ever in Tooele County. I don't think it'd be a stretch to say that," Utah State University Tooele County extension agent Linden Greenhalgh told the AP.

Utahns are NOT happy, though ski and snowboard enthusiasts would probably still take the snow.
