Utah's First Distillery Since the Prohibition is Open

Drinking has always been going on (and going off!) in Park City. So it makes sense that for the first time since the prohibition, the bustling mountain town is home to a fine whiskey distillery: The High West Distillery, that is.

Park City resident David Perkins opened shop earlier this summer (after ditching a career in biotech), and his new distillery is gearing up for its first ski season. Set in the old “National Garage” at 703 Park Avenue, the gourmet watering hole is likely to be a big draw.

Forget the fact that the rough-hewn façade of the distillery is very “Old West.” Perkins’ blends are something to savor. His signature concoction, the Rendezvous Rye, is artfully bottled in hand-blown vessels that have a weathered appearance for even more of a “Robert Redford” effect, and apparently the rich golden elixer tastes just as deluxe. Already the whiskey has garnered national attention, too. Malt Advocate Magazine listed it as one of the top ten America whiskies of the year.

Park City already has a lot going for it. Now the town can add a ski-in, ski-out artisan distillery to its growing list of attractions.
