How high-profile kidnapping victims Elizabeth Smart and Jaycee Dugard are coping
The high-profile kidnappings Elizabeth Smart and Jaycee Lee Dugard both occurred near their homes in mountain towns--Smart from Salt Lake City and Jaycee Lee Dugard from South Lake Tahoe. Smart, who was 14 at the time she was kidnapped from her bed in 2002, suffered a great deal of abuse, especially rape, at the hands of her captor, Brian David Mitchell. She faced him for the first time in court last week, describing in great detail how she was raped at least once a day during her nine months in captivity. Smart is currently a senior at Brigham Young University, and will be leaving in the near future for Paris, where she will be on a full-time mission for her church.
Back in 1991, Dugard was abducted while waiting at her bus stop by Phillip and Nancy Garrido. She was abused and raped by Phillip Garrido, as he also bore two children with her. Dugard's captivity lasted over 18 years, and she was released and reunited with her family almost two months ago. She has spent the time getting re-accustomed to life in the outside world and away from the walls that surrounded her backyard compound at the Garrido residence. Her attorney has said that when the time comes, she will face the Garridos in court and testify against them.
The newest issue of "In Touch Weekly" has exclusive interviews and details about both of the girls' ordeals. It also details how the wives of the kidnappers, Wanda Ileen Barzee and Nancy Garrido, contributed to each of the crimes using mind control and threats. The issue hit newsstands today.

The two cases are far more dissimilar than similar. Jaycee was abducted be a total stranger who took to her face on the street. Elizabeth was abducted by a former workman her father had befriended. Elizabeth was on the road by bus and hitchhiking and constantly under threat of physical abuse for nine months. Jaycee was held for 18 years and appears to have established a Stockholm bond with her captor. Elizabeth developed a strong antipathy for her captors as soon as she knew she was safe. Jaycee has more complications due to her "family" connections (her beautiful daughters whom she loves). She may also care for her captor due to these complications. I hope the angels hold this woman's hand when she testifies. I hope they are hugging her and her little girls right now.
Finally, I hope those monsters get what they deserve.

There is more similarities. Both older males had a female co-conspirator. It is terrible enough that one person could do this, but for a women to helping them both is unfathomable. Clearly this is unfavomable human depravity at the lowest level, both because of the ages of the victims (14 & 11) and the clearly advance planning of the abductions and use of the child victims. Both are cases where both perpetrators must be imprisoned without parole until death, lest they do it again.
