Kidnapper of Utah resident Elizabeth Smart pleads guilty

Fresh off the heels of the Jaycee Lee Dugard apology letter written by her alleged kidnapper Phillip Garrido, one of the kidnappers of Utah resident Elizabeth Smart has pleaded guilty. Wanda Eileen Barzee pleaded guilty to federal charges today regarding the 2002 child abduction case. Brett Tolman is the U.S. Attorney for Utah: "Ms. Barzee has agreed to fully cooperate with the United States and the state of Utah in the prosecution of Brian David Mitchell." That's her husband with whom she planned the abduction seven years ago.

Barzee will not be sentenced until she carries out her testimony against her husband. In the plea, Barzee said: "I aided and abetted Mitchell in the confinement, control and sexual assault of Elizabeth Smart."

Barzee and Mitchell are accused of abducting Elizabeth from her Salt Lake City home at knifepoint. Elizabeth was found nine months later walking down a street in Sandy with them.
