Colorado loves marijuana

We already know Breckenridge loves it, as well as dozens of other ski towns across the country. Is the whole state of Colorado sharing the love though? In a recent telephone poll taken across the state, 500 random people were asked if they would vote yes or no on a proposal to legalize medical marijuana. In the poll, which has a margin of error of 4.38 percent, 64 percent of respondents said "yes" to the proposal, with 34 percent saying they would be a "strong yes."

Matt Brown, executive director of Coloradoans for Medical Mariijuana Regulation, said: "There's vast public support for responsibly regulated medical marijuana." However, there are always two sides to every argument as we can see with the Republican Attorney General John Suthers. "It's easy to say in a vacuum that voters support the type of medical marijuana distribution system that the dispensary owners advocate, but the devil is in the details," Suthers said. "Once the voters understand the full extent that the current system is being abused to allow healthy young people to procure marijuana, they will be much less likely to support it."

It will be interesting to see how the world of medical marijuana, (and just plain old marijuana) shifts in the next five to ten years. Feel free to comment on your opinions...the floor is open.

I hope marijuana is legalized within the next 5 years. I don't support government regulated marijuana because it will likely be overpriced, which wouldn't eliminate the black market at all. The free market needs to be revitalized. It would be nice to see state licensed, non-profit caregivers that legally sell marijuana to adults, and by that I mean someone over the age of 18. You wouldn't need a prescription for this. The cannabis cards California issues to people are a joke - you can get one for basically any "pain" you have. Furthermore, legally cultivating my own medicine would be a lot better than spending all that money on something I can grow on my own. I really hope people start to wise up about marijuana and legalize it already.

legalize it! Everyone knows it's everywhere and they can't stop it so they should just make it legal

Marijuana is safer to consume than Alcohol. It should be legalized for medical purposes as well as recreational purposes for adults.

With 26 MILLION more Americans who admit to using cannabis in the last 12 months, more than 1,000,000 non-violent drug offenders in prison, and only 3 million total prison beds, is there anyone who seriously thinks we CAN 'win' the War on Drugs? If so, what drugs are THEY on?! After 40 years of a 'War on Drugs,' cannabis is still available in EVERY state, and EVERY city. The 'War' has been such an abysmal failure, that our drug use in this country is nearly TWICE what it is in Amsterdam, and Portugal, where they've decriminalized EVERYTHING. No, abusing drugs isn't good for you (although cannabis has some VERY real benefits), but with alcohol killing 75,000 Americans a year, and tobacco another 450,000, it does make one wonder at the near ZERO rate of mortality with cannabis. But that doesn;t stop the Narco-Nazis, they know what's best for us! Let's listen to one of their speeches that has been slightly altered for accuracy "It's ADDICTIVE whooo-boy! Cannabis can become habitual for those who use it heavily, up to TEN PERCENT of heavy users may become emotionally dependent. While alcohol only physically addicts 15%, and tobacco physically addicts over 30%, but those people know what they're getting into, so they're ok. Who cares if cannabis is less physically addictive than caffeine. You know that emotional dependence is still bad, right? Yes, people can become emotionally dependent on TV, food, the internet, spending, hoarding, and SEX, but we can't outlaw those and vilify their practitioners like we can potheads! (we even have a nifty negative word to call them! POTHEADS!!) And ignore that 1999 Institute of Medicine Study that showed that cannabis isn't a gateway drug. Their findings that alcohol and tobacco are far more often the gateways to substance abuse is absolutely ludicrous, who believes that 'science' stuff anyway. No sir, the only option is to continue oppressing and demonizing those stupid hippie potheads. Using a non-lethal, less-addictive substance, and PAYING NO TAXES!! Those morons would probably pay for our Universal Healthcare, and be PROUD OF IT!! Stupid POTHEADS!" Ah, that was refreshing! Let's be frank, at present, cannabis is still EVERYWHERE, even the DEA and ONDCP can't say it isn't (feel free to quiz them). Do you really want some dumb hippy pothead (or a member of MS13) selling your kid dope? It's already happening. Who do you think controls the distribution of cannabis right now? With it outlawed, only outlaws have it, and that's where all 'potheads' have to go to get it. They don't card, they don't pay taxes, they don't ensure the cannabis they sell is free of chemicals or pesticides or insecticides. They just get huge sums of money for what is generally an easily grown plant, and shoot and kill people for the right to sell from a certain corner. And they will NEVER check your kid's ID before selling him dope. Take the dope out of outlaws hands, and help keep it out of kid's hands.

It'll never be illegal to me.

"It will be interesting to see shifts in the next five to ten years." I clearly remember in 1969 sharing a joint with friends, each offering his/her predictions as to when marijuana would be legalized in the USA. No one imagined that it could possibly be more than twenty more years, and everyone felt that when our generation took control (congress, presidency, courts) it would surely be legalized. That was forty years ago. As for the 'next five to ten years', pot will still be kept illegal by the hypocritical alcohol/tobacco-consuming politicians and moralizers.

The marijuana discussion is not just about medicine. It's time to drive a wedge between the criminal drug dealers and our kids. Licensing, taxing, and regulating marijuana will put the drug dealers out of business and protect our children. Regulate the marijuana business, medical or otherwise. While we’re at it, let’s implement a personal cultivation permit. Limit the number of plants, and put a fee on it, something like a fishing license, with maybe a little extra for education or fixing the roads. How about $100 per year for a permit to cultivate a dozen plants for personal use or to give away the product? It's a win-win.

John, just because something is everywhere and can't be stopped isn't a reason to legalize it. Children use that excuse with their parents, that everyone is doing it, so they should be able to do it also. Meth is everywhere, and I don't want it legalized. I would like to see marijuana legalized, regulated, and taxed like alcohol. As for MMJ, it's a farce, anyone can get a MMJ card.
