No surprise, Lindsey Vonn wins Colorado Athlete of the Year

DENVER, CO (JAN. 14)--The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, housed in the home of the NFL's Denver Broncos, has named Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) its 2009 Athlete of the Year on the laurels of a season that included two World Championships and three Audi FIS Alpine World Cup titles, including her second consecutive overall crown.

Vonn's nine World Cup wins in 2009 set an American single season record surpassing Phil Mahre's incredible 1982 season of eight victories and also moved her ahead of Tamara McKinney for the most World Cup wins for a woman. Vonn, who swept three events in three days Jan. 8-10 in Haus im Ennstal, Austria is currently second all-time for wins by an American, male or female, with 28 career victories. Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) currently holds the high mark with 31.

University of Colorado track star Jenny Barringer was named the female collegiate athlete of the year and Air Force Falcons hockey forward Jacques Lamoureux was named the top male collegiate athlete.

The trio will be honored at an April 20 banquet along with the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2010. Those inductees are Mike Shanahan, Joe Sakic, Marc Johnson, Larry Zimmer, Dean Lahr and Bob Blasi.
