Shaun White requests new nickname, win a free lift ticket to Mammoth
For years, snowboard extraordinaire and Olympian Shaun White has been known in many circles as simply "The Flying Tomato." While it seems that White hasn't' exactly been the biggest fan of his imposed crimson nickname, even though it has helped turn him into the most marketable action sports athlete since Tony Hawk.
White said, "Whoever was on the mic had some dead air to fill -- and the name (The Flying Tomato) came out of his mouth."
With the Winter X Games 14 underway, and the 2010 Winter Olympics kicking off in a matter of weeks (February 12th) White has requested the media and fans to start referring to him under a new nickname. Although White's ginger lion-esque mane has only gotten longer in recent time, he is hoping to drop "The Flying Tomato" name in favor of a Jim Henson-inspired moniker.
Shaun's latest request is that he be known as "The Animal." The Animal was a long-haired rocking drummer from The Muppet Show. Since Shaun is the rockstar of the snowboard world, and has some pretty long locks, he felt the nickname was a more appropriate title.
Apparently not everyone agrees as the nickname has not really taken off quite yet.
Mammoth Mountain (White's home mountain growing up) has declared a contest to assist White in finding a more fitting name then either of his two current options. The Socal resort (relatively) has opened a contest on their LiveVibe blog to give fans a chance to craft their idea of what Shaun's latest nickname should be. The winner will gain bragging rights and a free lift ticket to the resort. Pretty sweet.
Better think fast though as the contest closes at noon PST on Monday, February 1.
