Skier survives 17-hour avalanche burial in Swiss Alps near Geneva

Jesus raises Lazurus from the Pet CemetaryThe prerequisite "miracle" will be dragged out for this one.  In the math world, a miracle is but a mathematical odd.  Albeit a long one.  Count this 21-year-old skier as someone who doesn't care whether it was the divine or simply math that saved him.

Skiing by himself on an unmarked run, there's some bad math in that, the skier triggered an avalanche in the Evolene region 50 miles east of Geneva.

Rescuers and avalanche dogs uncovered the man 17 hours after the slide.  Amazingly, he appears to have suffered nothing more than a bit of hypothermia.

"I've never heard of such a case before," said police spokesman Jean-Marie Bornet. "It's already very difficult to survive more than 45 minutes beneath an avalanche.  He's a very lucky man."

Luck, miracle, or math?
