The mountains of California are some of the most beautiful in the world, and with them, they carry a great deal of history.  Mammoth Lakes, which we in the ski industry know as the home of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, is also very important historically.  It is located in the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, which is a region made famous by naturalist John Muir and photographer Ansel Adams.

Muir was an early advocate of wilderness preservation, and he founded the Sierra Club, one of the most important conservation organizations in the country. His activism helped to save the Yosemite Valley and the Sequoia National Park. Adams is best known for his black-and-white photographs of nature, especially in Yosemite National Park. Mount Ansel Adams was named for him in 1985, which is a peak in the Sierra Nevada range that has an elevation of 11,760 feet.
