A 59-year-old climber has died and two others are injured after being struck by falling rock debris in the southwest Colorado mountains located near Telluride.

San Miguel County authorities say retired Army colonel Peter Topp of Colorado Springs died on Monday before two rescue helicopters could reach his group of 5 climbers.

The incident occurred as the group was traversing the ridge located between Mount Wilson and El Diente.

Topp was reportedly an experienced mountaineer, who had climbed 45 of Colorado's 14ers, according to The Denver Post.
