Four-time Olympic ski jumping champ Matti Nykanen convicted of aggravated assault
Four-time Olympic ski jumping gold medalist Matti Nykanen of Finland was convicted Tuesday on aggravated assault charges resulting from an alleged Christmas Day knife attack on his now ex-wife in their home last year. He was sentenced to 16 months in prison.
In addition to the jail time, the Finish court ordered Nykaenen to pay $13000 to his wife for damages and her legal fees.
Nykanen won four gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics, and was a four-time World Cup champion.
In 2006, Nykanen was sentenced to four months in prison for another assault on his wife. That incident occurred only three days after he was released from jail under a sentence from a separate stabbing offense in 2004.
