Q & A with Paul Maxwell

Paul Maxwell is one of the cable television industries biggest luminaries.  For the past 4 decades, he has been one of the industries most respected journalists and founded most of the publications that the industry reads including Multichannel News and Cablefax.  He resides in Breckenridge and is an avid skier.

Tell us about your relationship with the mountains?

Got drafted into the US Army when I failed to get ordained (and keep my deferment) ... got sent to Fort Carson in Colorado Springs after OCS ... and never left. Found a spiritual home!

 Why did you pick Breckenridge?

Was living in Aspen after the Army and a short sting at U of Colorado to really learn how to ski ... was working in Hawaii and San Jose and kept missing flights ... Breckenridge is a real town with four world class ski areas within a half hour ... and only a couple of hours from the Denver airport.

If Breckenridge shut down, where would you move to?

Revelstoke, BC ... if it had an airport!

How does the summer differ from the winter there?

Less snow. The Rockies are perfect most of the time ... mud season is the only bummer.

What is your favorite place in the world to ski?

Heli-skiing New Zealand's South Island ... anywhere in the northern Rockies in British Columbia (CMH especially).

Who are some of the coolest people you have skied with?

The late Bill Ziff; the late Hans Gmoser. George Stein (guy who founded Encore/Starz); John Goddard, former CEO of Viacom Cable; Mike Allen - best friend for 40+ years and former Army officer (too) and now ski instructor at Copper Mountain.

You are obviously one of the most important people in the media side of the
television business. How have you accomplished all this without having to
live in NY or LA?

Clean air to breath. Can't take the coasts all that seriously. Being away has a certain perspective ... and airplanes go there all the time.
