The three most popular states for skiing (based on skier visits) are Colorado, California, and Vermont.  The fourth may surprise you: New York.  Yep, New York’s four-million skier visits in 2008-09 season was a record for the state, ranking fourth in the U.S.

“We were able to help New Yorkers and travelers up and down the East Coast see that they could stay at home or hop in the car and travel a short distance for a fantastic ski getaway,” said Thomas Ranese, chief marketing officer of Empire State Development.

New York ski resorts are gearing up to build on their momentum.  Construction of a new lift at Gore Mountain will link to the historic North Creek Ski Bowl.  Bristol Mountain Winter Resort recently began construction of a new base-to-summit “Galaxy Express” quad.
