Sunday River ski resort, located in Newry, Maine, among the White Mountains, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this season with quite a bang: $3.5 million in improvements will be unveiled, including upgrades to lodging, snowmaking, and lift service.  When the resort opened in in 1959, all that existed were four trails, a T-bar, and a small base lodge.  For the anniversary this season, the resort will boast 132 trails, 16 chairlifts, two Grand Resort Hotels, and four lodges–what a difference 50 years makes! The most significant improvement is the addition of custom-designed Boyne Beds to each room, which cost about $1.4 million.  Sunday River became a Boyne Resort in 2007, will host a huge party in celebration of its anniversary on December 19th, 2009.
