The 4th Annual Whitefish Whiteout ski mountaineering race will take place at Whitefish Mountain Resort on Saturday, January 22nd.

In the tradition of European randonée racing, the event takes competitors on an up-and-down route throughout the permit area of the resort, testing racers’ uphill and downhill skiing and snowboarding skills. The Whitefish Whiteout is part of the U.S. Ski Mountaineering Series, a race series at resorts throughout the country.

The race consists of two courses – a Recreation category and Race category course. Both categories start at the base of Chair 1 with the first ascent up Toni Matt. The Recreation course includes two ascents and one descent with approximately 2000 feet of vertical climbing. The Race course has four ascents and three descents with approximately 4000 feet of vertical climbing. Both courses have new sections this year and will finish at the summit of Big Mountain.

The event is open to Alpine Touring, Telemark and split board snowboards with men’s and women’s divisions in each category.

Pre-registration is available until noon on January 21st at the Base Lodge Information Center or by calling 406-862-2990. Day-of registration starts at 7:45 a.m., and the race starts at 9 a.m.

Entry fees are $45 for the Race category and $25 for the Recreation category. Each racer receives a goody bag with a shirt and sponsor items.
