The SMITTY award is a Travel +Leisure Social Media in Travel + Tourism Award, awarded. The SMITTY Awards showcase the most innovative uses of social media in the travel and tourism industry. The winners were selected by a panel of social media and travel industry professionals including Ivanka Trump executive vice presidentof development and acquisitions at The Trump Organization and Chris Mohney the former editor and chief of Tumblr, among others in the judging panel.

“We launched the SMITTYS last year simply to recognize innovation in social media, but the competition has also raised the creativity bar for travel companies,” said Rich Beattie, Executive Digital Editor of Travel + Leisure. “The increased level of originality really showed in this year’s entries—we saw new ideas on every social media platform.”

Ski Vermont’s mission is to help create a legislative, economic, and social environment in which the state’s ski areas can grow and prosper. Ski Vermont is a proud ambassador of the thriving winter tourism industry in the area, where the legislature has designated skiing and snowboarding as the official state sports. Vermont is the #1 ski state in the East Coast and third in the U.S. The state is highlighted by amazing snow quality and coverage, offering a variety of terrain perfect for skiing and snowboarding.

Ski Vermont won the award for its ‘Check in to Win’ program where the organization rewarded skiers and riders for checking into any Vermont Ski resort using social media tools such as Facebook or Foursquare. The program was recognized as the first statewide tourism program to use social media in the way it did. The program was simple to follow: sign up, check in via Facebook and Foursquare, and finally win cool swag!

According to the SMITTY awards, Ski Vermont did many things to be recognized, “From lift tickets to five-night ski-and-stay getaways, Ski Vermont entered visitors to win with every Facebook or Foursquare check-in. Fans were also encouraged to send pictures of themselves skiing and boarding with the hashtag #vtskibrag. Ski Vermont rewarded persistent braggers with extra sweepstakes entries.”

Ski Vermont had an awesome tactic and was recognized and awarded for such a different and incredible use of social media. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year and who will outdo Ski Vermont in the use of social media marketing.
