Description
Gender discrimination is alive and well in 2009. In 1924, the first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France. Ski jumping was one of the original eight events, and to this day, it is the only event that does not allow women to compete. Recently, World Champion Lindsey Van and Canadian national team member Katie Willis flew to Denver in an attempt to meet with IOC President Jacques Rogge. A convoluted case of a Friday fax to IOC headquarters in Switzerland not being relayed in time for a Wednesday meeting in Denver left the two athletes without a face-to-face. However, the IOC has since reached out to Van and Willis, and a meeting should take place soon. Van's skills, as well as those of her competitors, is indeed world class. The rapid progression in the past decade of women's ski jumping is deserving of the Olympic stage. The Ski Channel is completely behind Lindsey Van and her fellow competitors!
